Tamoy Thompson, MSW RSW, Registered Social Worker & Psychotherapist

Hi, I am Tamoy and I am a registered social worker and psychotherapist who practices from an anti-oppressive framework. I believe that meeting people “where they are” forms the basis of a trusting therapeutic relationship. I hold a Master of Social work degree from York University (2010). After working in the child welfare sector for over 10 years, it was evident that there are many barriers to wellness and that our environment is a major factor in shaping our wellbeing. I saw first-hand how challenging access to resources such as mental health services is for many oppressed communities, which furthers impacts their emotional wellbeing and physical safety. This guided me to work differently with families and led me on my journey into counseling. As a woman of colour, it was important to me to see myself reflected in the counseling community, as I know how vulnerable discussing our lived experiences can be. I am committed to working towards wellness while keeping in mind the many barriers. Furthermore, I strive to offer culturally sensitive approaches and safe, non-judgmental spaces for all clients. As a therapist, I adapt my approach based on the clients’ needs and preferences. I believe each individual is the expert on their own life and knows best when it comes to their lived experiences and needs. I aim to offer a safe space to explore processes, identifying and challenging unhelpful behaviors, barriers and patterns and developing the skills to achieve desired goals and outcomes. I utilize Cognitive Behaviour therapy, Solution Focused brief therapy and Mindfulness based approaches when needed.

I am a member in good standing of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Worker- registration # 818132 ).
