Acupuncture is a holistic healing modality that has been used for centuries to address various physical and mental health concerns, including anxiety and panic disorders. By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture can help restore balance to the body’s energy flow, or Qi (pronounced “chee”), thereby promoting relaxation and reducing feelings of anxiety and panic.
Here’s a guide to some key acupuncture points, including ear points and body points, that can be helpful for managing anxiety, stress and more:
Ear Points:
a. Shen Men:
- Location: This point is located in the upper portion of the ear’s triangular fossa, just above the earlobe.
- Benefits: Shen Men, also known as the “Spirit Gate,” is commonly used to promote relaxation, alleviate stress, and calm the mind. Stimulating this point can help reduce anxiety and induce a sense of inner peace.
b. Point Zero:
- Location: Point Zero is located at the center of the earlobe, in the depression where the earlobe meets the face.
- Benefits: Point Zero is believed to be a grounding point that helps reset the body’s energy and promote overall balance. Stimulating this point can help alleviate feelings of panic and bring about a sense of stability and calmness.

Application of Ear Seeds or Ear Needles:
Ear seeds or ear needles are tiny seeds, beads or needles that are placed on specific points on the ear and secured with adhesive tape. They provide continuous stimulation to the acupuncture points and can be used as an adjunct to acupuncture treatment or as a standalone therapy for anxiety and panic relief. To apply ear seeds:
1. Cleanse the skin around the ear points with alcohol wipes to ensure cleanliness.
2. Using tweezers, place the ear seeds gently on the designated points on the ear.
3. Press down firmly to secure the ear seeds in place.
4. Massage the ear gently to ensure proper adherence of the ear seeds or needles.
5. Ear seeds can be left in place for several days, and gentle pressure can be applied to them throughout the day to stimulate the points. Ear needles can be left in 1-5 days or when they are tender and when they are finished, fold the bandaid over the needle before discarding.
Important Considerations:
Consult with a qualified acupuncturist, naturopathic doctor or healthcare provider before trying acupuncture or ear seeds for anxiety and panic relief, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are pregnant. Acupuncture is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include lifestyle modifications, stress management techniques, and other therapeutic interventions. Individual responses to acupuncture may vary, and it may take several sessions to experience significant relief from anxiety and panic symptoms.
By incorporating these acupuncture points into your wellness routine, you can support your body’s natural ability to manage anxiety and promote emotional well-being. Remember to listen to your body and seek professional guidance to determine the best approach for your individual needs.
Body Points:
a. Pericardium 6 (P6):
- Location: P6 is located on the inner forearm, approximately three finger-widths below the wrist crease, between the tendons.
- Benefits: P6, also known as the “Inner Gate,” is a powerful point for calming the mind and alleviating nausea, which can be associated with anxiety. Stimulating this point can help regulate the heart and relieve emotional tension.
b. Heart 7 (H7):
- Location: H7 is located on the palm side of the wrist, at the crease where the hand meets the wrist, in line with the little finger.
- Benefits: H7, also known as the “Spirit Gate,” is an essential point for calming the mind and promoting tranquility. Stimulating this point can help regulate the heart rate, soothe anxiety, and promote restful sleep.
c. Large Intestine 4 (LI4):
- Location: LI4 is located on the back of the hand, in the webbing between the thumb and index finger.
- Benefits: LI4 is a potent point for relieving stress, tension headaches, helping with digestion, and promoting overall relaxation. Stimulating this point can help release blocked energy and promote a sense of emotional well-being. Do not use this point when pregnant.
d. Large Intestine 11 (LI11):
- Location: LI11 is located at the outer end of the elbow crease, on the outer side of the arm.
- Benefits: LI11 is commonly used to clear “heat” and reduce inflammation in the body. It can also help regulate the circulation of Qi and blood, promoting a sense of calmness and reducing anxiety symptoms. It is also good for digestive issues such as constipation and diarrhea.
